The Woman who's death inspired a revolution

(NEWZURBAN)- "say her name, MAHSA AMINI!" screamed millions of protesters around the world.

Who is she? And why did her death spark what might be the strongest women-led revolution in Iranian history.

On September 13, Jina "Mahsa" Amini, age 22, was detained by Iran's morality police for "improperly" donning her hijab. Her family and the local media claim that she was severely beaten during this time. Three days later, while still in police custody, she passed away.

Protests broke out all throughout Iran after news of the tragic episode spread, due in part to reporters Niloofar Hamedi and Elahe Mohammadi, who the Iranian dictatorship has subsequently imprisoned. The protests were led by Women who chopped their hair, tore off their hijabs, and adopted the rallying cries "women, life, freedom" 

The impact of Amini's death, however, and the reason she was included on Forbes' list of the 100 Most Powerful Women in the World, is that what began as a protest against the treatment of women by the regime has grown into a revolutionary movement that calls for regime change and is known all over the world. The term Amini has not only come to represent the oppression of its people by theocratic governments, but it has also evolved into a hashtag that, as of November 30, had been used 79 million times.
