According to the Nigerian Society of Water Engineers, 179 million Nigerians lack access to clean drinking water in their country.
According to the group, only contaminated water has been available to urban dwellers, which contributes to the spread of various ailments throughout the nation.
Adeyinka Sobowale, the national chairman of NIWE, revealed this on Wednesday during a news conference organised to commemorate World Water Day in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.
Sobowale stated the study was conducted by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources in 2021 and cited data from the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene National Outcome Routine Mapping.
He mentioned that the Bureau of Statistics and partners including the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization and the United Nations Children's Fund contributed to the inter-agency effort.
"Up to 87% (179 million) of Nigerians lack access to drinking water services that are safely managed," he stated. The majority of these services are offered by state water agencies that are owned by the government and have recently displayed shockingly poor performance. "Due to this circumstance, Nigerians are now self-supplying from unclean water sources.
"Safe access is not available to 87% of us. Why does this matter? That indicates that there is a problem with our water supply organization.
"A country that cannot effectively feed its citizens is still in its infancy. Many Nigerians experience food insecurity.
