11,001 Nigerian-trained medical professionals are currently working as doctors in the UK, according to Sunday PUNCH.

162 doctors with medical training in Nigeria were granted licenses to practice in the UK between February 2 and March 15, 2023.

In addition, our correspondent noted that from March 16 to March 18, 2023, 15 doctors received licenses to practice in the UK.

The report is in accordance with the General Medical Council of the UK's registration. The official list of doctors in the UK is kept up to date by the GMC, a public organization.

The number of doctors trained in Nigeria who are currently practicing in the UK increased from 10,824 to 11,001, according to our correspondent, who has been watching the GMC website for the past 45 days.

Due to low salaries, unsatisfactory working conditions, poor welfare, insecurity, and job dissatisfaction, healthcare professionals in Nigeria are leaving the country in search of better opportunities.

The present concern is how to replace the gap left by physicians who leave the workforce or retire in the nation. this is a serious case of brain drain as almost all the top qualified medics are leaving the country.

Nigeria needs to generate roughly 12,000 doctors a year to meet its medical workforce needs. After India (31,997) and Pakistan, Nigeria has the third-highest number of foreign doctors working in the UK (18,524).
