BREAKING: FG offers to pay more than N60,000 as minimum wage

 Beyond the N60,000 it first suggested as the new minimum wage, the Federal Government has consented to paying more.

In response to the organized labor movement's statewide strike, the government met with labor leaders on Monday night in Abuja and made the decision about the national minimum wage.

The goal of the meeting, which took place in the Secretary to the Government of the Federation's office on Monday night, was to break the deadlock and put an end to the strikes that had crippled numerous industries around the nation.

The following resolution was made after the meeting: "The Tripartite Committee will meet daily for the next week to finalize an agreeable National Minimum Wage; and the President of Nigeria, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, committed to establishing a National Minimum Wage higher than N60,000."

Other resolutions were; “In recognition of the President’s commitment, the organized labour would immediately hold meetings of its organs to consider this new offer; and no worker would face victimization as a consequence of participating in the industrial action.”

Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris and Minister of State for Labor and Employment Nkeiruka Onyejeocha signed these resolutions on behalf of the federal government.

Festus Osifo, the president of the Trade Union Congress, and Joe Ajaero, the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress, represented organized labor.

A statewide indefinite strike by the NLC was announced on Friday, June 2, 2024, at midnight. The action was sparked by the Federal Government's refusal to raise the proposed minimum wage above N60,000.

After the government and organized labor failed to reach an agreement, Ajaero declared the strike.
