**Fatal Cement Truck Accident Claims Five Lives in Anambra State**
Awka, Anambra State — A devastating road traffic accident occurred on Tuesday at the Green Energy Oil and Gas filling station in Eke Awgbu, Orumba North local government area, resulting in the deaths of five people. The accident involved a truck loaded with cement, owned by BUA, which lost control and collided with several vehicles before crashing. The truck did not have a registration number.
The crash impacted a commercial tricycle (registration number: NZH84LG), a commercial QLINK motorcycle (registration number: OLU245QV), and a private Honda motorcycle without a registration number.
Margaret Onabe, the Acting Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Anambra State, confirmed the fatalities, noting that four males and one female were killed instantly. The injured were transported to a hospital for treatment.
Onabe stated that the probable cause of the crash was either excessive speed or brake failure. She cited an eyewitness who reported that the truck driver was speeding, experienced brake failure, and lost control of the vehicle, leading to a collision with other vehicles at a checkpoint.
"Eleven people were involved in the crash: nine male adults and two female adults. Five male adults and one female adult sustained varying degrees of injury, while four male adults and one female adult were killed," Onabe detailed.
Before the FRSC rescue team from RS5.35 Igboukwu arrived, passersby had already rushed the injured victims to the Referral Health Centre in Awgbu. The deceased were taken to St Joseph’s Hospital mortuary in Adazi.
The FRSC rescue team managed to clear the obstruction caused by the accident to ease traffic in the area. FRSC Sector Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and urged motorists to maintain safe speeds while driving.
