NEWZURBAN-Man Arrested for Throwing Mother-in-Law from Fifth-Floor Balcony

A man has been arrested in the Russian city of Artyom, Primorsky region, after allegedly hurling his 84-year-old mother-in-law to her death from a fifth-floor balcony. The woman fell 50 feet and died instantly from multiple injuries. Her 54-year-old son-in-law has been detained by police on suspicion of murder.

The suspect reportedly told officers that he wanted to "relieve" his son of the burden of caring for the elderly woman, who had limited mobility. He believed her care was too much of a burden and threw her from the balcony. The suspect has been remanded in custody for two months pending further investigations. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison.

Recent Case in Germany

This incident comes just days after a woman in Germany was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for manslaughter after dropping her newborn daughter out of a window. Katarina Jovanovic, 28, from Lauffen am Neckar, Baden-Wuerttemberg State, was found guilty at the Heilbronn District Court on July 3.

Judges heard that Jovanovic had given birth at home in secret on September 12, ten months prior, and then dropped her baby daughter from her apartment window, a fall of nearly 12 feet. Horrified passersby discovered the minutes-old infant's body with a shattered skull beneath Jovanovic's balcony and called the police. Jovanovic stated she was worried that having a baby would ruin her career.
