Washington, D.C. – Nancy Pelosi, the former Speaker of the House, has reportedly raised concerns about President Joe Biden's ability to defeat former President Donald Trump in the upcoming 2024 presidential election. According to sources, Pelosi has been working with several House Democrats to devise a plan that might encourage Biden to reconsider his candidacy for the party’s nomination as the election approaches.
An anonymous Democratic lawmaker described Pelosi as "very concerned" about Biden's chances, noting that she hasn't definitively stated her support for him. Another lawmaker highlighted Pelosi's urgent message: "The stakes are so high. We can't afford to do anything but have our best possible opportunity to win."
Pelosi's concerns intensified following the Biden campaign's response to a contentious debate in Atlanta two weeks ago. She reportedly believes the campaign's reaction lacked an "honest reckoning" and "objective analysis."
Another anonymous Democrat revealed that Pelosi doesn't view the matter as resolved, despite Biden's firm declaration of his candidacy. "It's very clear that she doesn't think that this matter is settled and that Joe Biden's statement - 'I'm running; shut up' - she said, 'No, we're still talking about this.'"
Pelosi is rumored to represent a faction of Democrats who feel pressured into supporting Biden. Representative Adam Smith of Washington echoed this sentiment, criticizing Biden's campaign strategy and calling for him to step down.
In response to these reports, Pelosi's spokesperson Ian Krager conveyed a supportive yet cautious stance: "Speaker Pelosi fully supports whatever President Biden decides to do. We must turn our attention to why this race is so important: Donald Trump would be a disaster for our country and our democracy."
During an appearance on MSNBC's Morning Joe, Pelosi reiterated her position, stating that the decision to run rests with Biden. "It's up to the president to decide if he's going to run. We're all encouraging him to make that decision because time is running out," she said. When reminded of Biden's declared intention to run, Pelosi responded, "I want him to do whatever he decides to do. Whatever he decides, we go with."
In a letter to House Democrats on Tuesday, Biden reaffirmed his commitment to the race: "I want you to know that despite all the speculation in the press and elsewhere, I am firmly committed to staying in this race, to running this race to the end, and to beating Donald Trump."
