Officers from the Ikorodu Area Command of the Lagos State Police intervened to save a young woman from a suicide attempt on June 29, 2024.

According to a statement from SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, the rescue operation was prompted by a concerned citizen's alert around 2 p.m. The citizen reported that the 19-year-old woman was attempting to ingest an insecticide.

Responding swiftly to the tip-off, police officers were dispatched to the scene and successfully prevented the woman from harming herself, as confirmed by Hundeyin.

The identity of the rescued woman is being withheld for privacy reasons. She disclosed to authorities that she had been undergoing severe emotional distress due to two main issues: an unplanned pregnancy and falling victim to financial fraud.

"She revealed that she was impregnated by a man who refused to take responsibility for the pregnancy. Additionally, she had been defrauded of her earnings from her Point of Sale (POS) business," the police statement revealed.

Currently, the young woman is receiving necessary psychological support. Concurrently, an investigation has been initiated to apprehend those involved in her plight.

The Lagos State Police Command emphasized the importance of mental health awareness in the community. SP Benjamin Hundeyin urged individuals facing similar challenges to seek timely assistance, emphasizing the police force's commitment to public safety and well-being.

The incident underscores ongoing concerns about mental health support and protection of vulnerable individuals within Lagos State.
