Department of State Services Investigates Polish Nationals Amid Protests in Kano

August 7, 2024 – The Department of State Services (DSS) has launched an investigation into the alleged involvement of seven Polish nationals in recent nationwide protests against economic hardship in Kano State. The individuals were apprehended on Tuesday during demonstrations that began on August 1 in response to widespread hardship affecting Nigerian citizens.

Peter Afunanya, DSS spokesperson, confirmed the arrests on Wednesday during a briefing with the Diplomatic Corps in Abuja. He emphasized that the detentions were part of standard security measures rather than a targeted operation against Polish citizens.

“The seven individuals were detained due to their presence at the protest and the display of foreign flags,” Afunanya explained. “As a responsible security organization, we are required to conduct verification and ascertain the circumstances surrounding such incidents. This is not a targeted action against Polish nationals but a routine security procedure.”

Afunanya urged international cooperation in maintaining global stability, advising other nations to ensure their citizens do not undermine domestic peace in foreign countries. He underscored that DSS operations adhere to democratic principles and respect for human rights, regardless of whether individuals are Nigerian or foreign.

“We request that countries avoid allowing their citizens to act against the domestic stability of other nations. Any unrest in one country can have ripple effects globally,” Afunanya added.

The spokesperson also highlighted Nigeria’s large population and the importance of international support in addressing domestic challenges.
