House Spokesperson Clarifies Lawmakers' Salary Amid Speculation
August 7, 2024 – Akin Rotimi, Spokesperson for the House of Representatives, has clarified that the actual monthly salary for lawmakers is N600,000, not the speculated N900,000.
In a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja, Rotimi addressed recent media reports alleging discrepancies in lawmakers' salaries, including claims of a N936,979 payout for July. He stated that the confirmed monthly salary is N600,000, noting that this figure accounts for deductions, including housing advances paid at the beginning of a member’s tenure.
Rotimi explained that the salary figure shown by a member on a television program was an exception. This particular member had assumed office through a court ruling well after the usual onboarding period, leading to atypical salary figures.
He reaffirmed the House's commitment to a resolution passed on July 18, which mandates a 50 percent reduction in salaries for six months to address economic challenges.
Acknowledging a delay in implementing the resolution for July due to administrative and financial coordination, Rotimi assured that instructions for salary adjustments have been issued and will be enforced moving forward.
