In a shocking incident in Sapele, Delta State, the proprietress of His Majesty Group of Schools, Mrs. Fatima Umukoro, was allegedly murdered by her 25-year-old son, Emmanuel Umukoro. The tragic event reportedly took place on the night of Saturday, September 8, 2024.
Mrs. Umukoro, wife of Rev. Prince Umukoro, the resident pastor of Victory Family Assembly International (VIFA), was a prominent figure in the Sapele community.
Sources indicate that Emmanuel had long struggled with mental health issues, which were aggravated by suspected substance abuse. Despite undergoing rehabilitation, his battle with drug addiction continued, leading to sporadic violent behavior.
According to neighbors, Emmanuel allegedly attacked his mother with an axe before setting her body on fire. Witnesses noticed the gate of the Umukoro residence left open around 10 p.m., an unusual occurrence that prompted them to investigate. Upon entering the house, they discovered the charred remains of Mrs. Umukoro.
One eyewitness shared, "We saw fire coming from inside the house, and the door was left open. When we went inside, we found her body, burnt beyond recognition." Neighbors also reported seeing Emmanuel driving his mother's car out of the compound around 8:30 p.m. at high speed.
Emmanuel was apprehended by police along the Sapele-Warri Road as he attempted to flee.
State Police Command spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident on Sunday, September 9, stating that while Emmanuel is in custody, investigations are ongoing to determine his involvement in the crime.
