NANS Confirms Plans for Nationwide Protest Over Petrol Price Hike

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has confirmed its intention to proceed with a nationwide protest in response to the recent increase in petrol prices. According to Henry Okuomo, the Senate President of NANS, the student body is determined to voice its discontent with the government's decision, which they believe has exacerbated the hardship faced by Nigerians, especially students.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Friday, September 6, Okuomo emphasized that the protest is not a mere threat but a necessary action. He stated:

"We are not threatening a strike. That is what we are going to do because of the current situation of the country. Nigerians are currently facing a lot. We are facing hardship, and now, the government has increased fuel prices again. This has affected us as students. And as student leaders, we don’t have a choice now but to fight for the people."

Okuomo highlighted the significant role of students in Nigerian society, pointing out that over 40 million Nigerian students are directly affected by the price hike. He added:

"We have determined that on the 15th of this month, no going back. We are hitting the street hard."

Previous Denials and Clarifications

This announcement follows earlier confusion surrounding NANS' stance on the protest. Afeez Akinteye, the president of the association, had initially denied that the group was organizing any strike action. After a circular surfaced on social media suggesting that NANS would embark on a protest, Akinteye called on security agencies to investigate the source of the information, labeling it as false.

In a public statement, Akinteye urged Nigerians to disregard the reports, asserting that certain individuals were using the NANS name to stir unrest. He said:

“The individuals or groups behind these rumours are faceless entities who seek to exploit the name of NANS for their malicious purposes. They aim to destabilise the country and create unnecessary tension among citizens. We categorically disassociate ourselves from any such plans or intentions.”

Akinteye further called on the authorities to take swift action:

"We hereby call on the security agencies to launch a thorough investigation into the origin of this misinformation. Those responsible for spreading these falsehoods must be identified and held accountable."

NANS' Commitment to Peaceful Advocacy

Despite the conflicting messages, NANS has reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful advocacy. Okuomo’s confirmation of the protest reflects the association’s determination to ensure that the voices of Nigerian students are heard during this challenging period.

NANS maintains that it will continue to advocate for the rights and welfare of students through peaceful and lawful means. 

 "We must collectively ensure that the integrity of our democratic processes and the rule of law are upheld at all times," Akinteye reiterated.
